About the Department
The Department of Development Economics at the Dhaka School of Economics (DScE) is a pioneering academic unit under the University of Dhaka. Established in 2010, DScE was conceived as a specialized institution modelled on internationally acclaimed schools of economics such as the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Delhi School of Economics (DSE).
The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that combine rigorous economic theory with applied development practice. Its curriculum is uniquely designed to address South Asia's development challenges: poverty, inequality, food security, climate vulnerability, industrial transformation, and governance.
Anchored within the Faculty of Social Sciences all degrees are awarded by the University of Dhaka.
The Department aspires to be a Centre of Excellence for economic thought, policy analysis, and applied research in Bangladesh and beyond. It nurtures economists who can engage critically with local and global development debates, produce high-quality research, and contribute to public policy.
Mission of the department is to produce graduates equipped with the analytical skills, ethical grounding, and development insight to tackle Bangladesh's and the developing world's most pressing socio-economic challenges.
